cybercrime nepal : The Cyber Bureau has arrested a 26-year-old man named Nabaraj Lamichhane from Pokhara on charges of attempting to hack mobile banking apps. Lamichhane is a permanent resident of Putalibazar Municipality Ward No. 14, Syangja and currently resides in Pokhara Metropolitan City Ward No. 17, Kaski.

The Bureau, with the assistance of the Gandaki Provincial Police Office and the Kaski District Police Office, arrested Lamichhane on Wednesday from Birouta, Pokhara Metropolitan City Ward No. 17.

According to a press release issued by the Bureau, Lamichhane had been “continuously trying for a long time to gain unauthorized access to the information systems of financial institutions located in Kathmandu.”

Bureau spokesperson Police Superintendent Deepak Raj Awasthi said that Lamichhane was trying to gain unauthorized access to the banking system, not digital wallets, but declined to provide further details.

Superintendent Awasthi also declined to provide further details on which banks and mobile banking apps were targeted by the hacking attempts.

The Bureau said that preliminary investigations have found that Lamichhane had attempted to attack the core banking systems of several banks hundreds of times.

Lamichhane has been charged under the Electronic Transactions Act 2063 and Kathmandu District Court has granted a six-day extension of his remand to allow for further investigation.
